Overwrite files in Mac OS X Save dialogue window

September 24th, 2003 · No Comments · EN, Geeky

Try this on Mac OS any version:

1. Start TextEdit or any other application that edits documents of some type

2. Create a new document, hit CMD+S or go to File > Save

3. You will have the Mac OS X Save dialogue window to select a location. Select an existing file to overwrite.

You can’t! It’s simply impossible. You will have to type the file name :-/

Since I first used a Mac - 1996 Mac OS 7.x - I considered the Mac OS Save window broken. Selecting a file at this point was always possible in Windows and even DOS applications. It’s efficient, safe and natural.

In Mac OS pre-X, there was Default Folder, a shareware extension that did this, among other things. Last I checked, this feature was not available in Mac OS X version of Default Folder or in any other application.

Please Apple, fix this. Let us have our files selected when we need to. If you fear it may be confusing to new users, make the selection possible only if a modifier key is pressed, e.g. ALT+Click. We will thank you :-)
